We started off the new year by taking some time to think about our mental health. This is linked to the WI’s latest campaign, Mental Health Matters. Paul from local charity The Cellar Trust gave us a talk on stress, how it affects us and how to manage it, and gave us some links to local mental health resources. Then two of our members, Julie and Jenn, bravely shared their experiences of coping with metal health issues. Julie described her journey as a ‘victory’, having lived with bipolar disorder and depression for over 40 years, but now living life drug free with ‘butterfly moments’ of happiness. Jenn described how useful the crisis services had been to her and her family when she experienced mental health issues over Christmas 2017. Both talked about how important support from friends and family had been, and how this is something we can all do – just little things, like calling friends, taking them out for a walk or dropping a meal round can make such a difference.
